Dr. Hangee-Bauer describes how the 4R process—Remove, Replace, Reinoculate and Repair—serves as a successful approach in treating, managing or resolving many chronic digestive issues. By following the principles of this functional approach, it automatically allows for the protocols to be more effective, more focused, easier for the patient and less expensive overall.Read More

SFNM is now offering NAD+ IV therapy. As systemic NAD+ levels naturally decline as you get older, NAD+ IV therapy can help you regain some of your energy and slow down/reverse the aging process. It is also effective in treating anxiety, depression, insomnia, pain and inflammation, as well as autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases.Read More

Heartburn is a very common symptom. The NIH estimates that 60 million Americans experience a burning sensation in the chest or an acid taste in their mouths at least once a month. Heartburn can be an occasional symptom associated with heavy meals or alcohol consumption, or it could be associated with GERD.
Microneedling is also known as Collagen Induction Therapy. It is the process of creating microscopic tears in your epidermis (top layer of skin that everyone sees). These “micro” abrasions allow for the skin surface to be sloughed off so that brand new skin layers can begin forming. Microneedling is a very simple, safe, effective, and minimally invasive therapeutic technique.
Platelet Rich Plasma, also known as “PRP,” is a volume of fractionated plasma taken from your own blood. We draw a few tubes of blood, spin it with a centrifuge, and separate the portion which contains concentrated platelets. These are then injected into your diseased joints to promote tissue repair and accelerated healing.
Dr. Jillian Shannon is SFNM's newest doctor. She has a general naturopathic practice and specializes in regenerative medicine including BHRT, joint injections and IV therapies. She has been working closely with other practitioners specializing in functional endocrinology and anti-aging medicine with the use of stem cells, ozone, and PRP. She is available full time at SFNM and is accepting new patients.
The regenerative capacity of the human body is astounding! Before you give up on your joints and settle for chronic joint pain, why not use your own body’s healing properties and give platelet rich plasma a try? It’s minimally invasive and may result in lasting results with just 3 treatments.
Bio-identical hormone therapy (BHRT) is used to treat peri-menopausal or menopausal symptoms of hormone deficiency or imbalance. BHRT uses hormones that are the same as those naturally produced in your own body and are usually derived from plant extracts. Conventional hormone therapy uses hormones that come from the urine of pregnant horses or are synthesized in a way that is not identical to your body’s hormones.

Understanding and dealing with chronic digestive problems can be like alphabet soup. There are so many abbreviations and terms that it can make an already confusing situation even more so.
One of the most common conditions I see at SFNM is chronic digestion or elimination problems. Often patients have been to their primary care doctor and possibly a gastroenterologist without finding answers to their chronic symptoms. Most have scoured the internet looking for solutions, with many trying a wide variety of self treatments that can be expensive and yield minimal results. Self diagnosis can be very tricky, and without a solid understanding of the root causes, treatments are often ineffective or incomplete.Read More
On February 13, 2017 the American College of Physicians released new evidence-based clinical practice guidelines recommending that people with back pain be first treated with non-drug therapies, including acupuncture, heat, massage or spinal manipulation. Further the ACP advised patients should use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs if drug therapy is desired, with the exception of acetaminophen (Tylenol) due to its ineffectiveness and potential for harm. Finally, opiod and narcotic-type pain medications should not be used for treating back pain except as a last option.

The short answer is YES, and a recent study shows it has an even greater impact on health markers that affect blood sugar regulation, cholesterol and other blood fats, inflammation, weight, body mass and insulin sensitivity.
Researchers have been interested in assessing ways besides medications to address diabetes management and recently turned to acupuncture to evaluate its effectiveness. The results were surprising and showed it to be an extremely effective tool for improving insulin sensitivity and effective management of diabetes.
The American Cancer Society estimates that 26,730 Californian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis can be a very scary and devastating moment. It is common to feel lost and confused, particularly on how to navigate through the treatment options. Over the years, more and more women are turning to an integrative approach for their care. An integrative approach supports the use of conventional medicine, implements healthy lifestyle practices and promotes wellness of the whole person—mind, body and spirit.Read More
There is a transformation of medicine and healthcare as we know it. We are at the brink of a revolution where the system that exists today simply cannot support the needs of our population. There’s is a desperate need to understand interactions within the body and with functional medicine we can begin treating the soil and not the leaves. We begin to focus on the root cause, treat the body and heal it with food and nutrients, mindfulness and ancient traditions.
Inflammation is one of the body’s natural ways of protecting itself. It includes many chemical responses that help fight off infections, heal tissues and generate pain so we know something needs to be attended to. However, unresolved injuries, chronic infection and stress, environmental toxins and a diet high in inflammatory foods, contribute to chronic inflammation which can lead to chronic pain and illness.

Whatever health issues bring people to our clinic, it is very common to hear complaints of poor memory, lack of concentration, lack of focus and “brain fog.” While the vast majority of the time this does not represent early onset of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, it is nonetheless a troubling and limiting complaint. Fortunately, there is much that can be done to improve our cognitive function and enhance our memory.
