Think Low Testosterone Is Only in Older Men? Think Again

We often think of testosterone deficiency as a condition affecting older men. While it is normal to see hormones gradually decrease with age, we are increasingly seeing low testosterone levels in younger men as well.

IBS and SIBO and Leaky Gut, Oh My!

IBS and SIBO and Leaky Gut, Oh My!

Understanding and dealing with chronic digestive problems can be like alphabet soup. There are so many abbreviations and terms that it can make an already confusing situation even more so.

One of the most common conditions I see at SFNM is chronic digestion or elimination problems. Often patients have been to their primary care doctor and possibly a gastroenterologist without finding answers to their chronic symptoms. Most have scoured the internet looking for solutions, with many trying a wide variety of self treatments that can be expensive and yield minimal results. Self diagnosis can be very tricky, and without a solid understanding of the root causes, treatments are often ineffective or incomplete.

Acupuncture Recommended as First-Line Treatment of Back Pain

Acupuncture Recommended as First-Line Treatment of Back Pain

On February 13, 2017 the American College of Physicians released new evidence-based clinical practice guidelines recommending that people with back pain be first treated with non-drug therapies, including acupuncture, heat, massage or spinal manipulation. Further the ACP advised patients should use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs if drug therapy is desired, with the exception of acetaminophen (Tylenol) due to its ineffectiveness and potential for harm. Finally, opiod and narcotic-type pain medications should not be used for treating back pain except as a last option.

Whether acupuncture works by promoting the flow of Qi or by its action on powerful hormones and body chemistry, or both, the fact is it works.

IV Therapy for Sports Medicine and Performance Enhancement

IV Therapy for Sports Medicine and Performance Enhancement

Intravenous Nutrient Therapy (IVNT) has been shown to be useful in a wide variety of health conditions and most people we treat with IVNT at San Francisco Natural Medicine seek us out as part of their treatment of serious or chronic diseases such as cancer or Lyme disease. But what most don’t realize is that IVNT can support generally healthy people who are recovering from an acute illness or are just run down due to busy lifestyles, “overdoing it,” and other reasons. A great example of this is when we use IVNT with super-healthy people like peak performing athletes who report benefits when they incorporate IVNT into their fitness regimens.

Allergies & Air Pollution—Is Your Home Polluted?

We’ve all heard about air pollution in our cities, but indoor air pollution is increasingly being seen as a cause or contributor to human illness. A recent landmark report from the Royal College of Physicians estimates that in the U.K. about 40,000 deaths per year are linked to air pollution. Effects are found from infancy to old age, with demonstrated adverse effects on fetal development, miscarriage risk, increase in heart attacks and strokes, diabetes, dementia, obesity and cancer risk.
