Healthy Eating for Kids—Think Outside of the Lunch Box

Healthy Eating for Kids—Think Outside of the Lunch Box

The kids are back in school, and fall is upon us. We are moving from outdoor meals to inside the home. Transition periods such as the seasons changing are a great time for starting healthy habits. Here are some fun and engaging tips for helping your kids develop healthy eating habits.

EAT SEASONALLY AND LOCALLY:
Visit your local farmer’s market to experience seasonal foods with ALL your senses: see the vibrant colors, taste a peach, touch the warty gourds, smell the wildflower bouquets, hear the fiddlers playing.
Encourage your kids to ask the farmers about how and where the food was grown.
Allow them to pick out one new seasonal vegetable and fruit each week.
Plan a day-trip to a local farm, apple orchard or pumpkin patch to experience things firsthand.

What the Hemp? SFNM Now Offers Whole-Plant Hemp Extracts

At San Francisco Natural Medicine, we have a lot of respect for plant medicines, many of which have been used for thousands of years but have only recently been studied using modern scientific methods. Cannabis is an example of a plant that is finally being studied and showing effectiveness for a variety of health issues from reducing seizure activity to cancer support, but current laws around prescribing medical cannabis have prevented us from using these potent plants for our patients’ care.

What Do You Mean By "Therapeutic Order"?

What Do You Mean By "Therapeutic Order"?

When evaluating and working with our patients, NDs use a method called the The Therapeutic Order™.  Based on the health issues that are being addressed, their severity, and other factors, using the Therapeutic Order identifies the natural order in which therapies should be applied to provide the greatest benefit with the least potential for harm as well as harnessing the body's innate ability to heal. Use of this method helps NDs choose the least invasive and most appropriate points to begin health care interventions, and addresses the treatment of disease and other conditions while also promoting health and balance.

Suffering With Allergies This Year? SFNM Can Help!

With record rainfall breaking Northern California’s 5-year drought, we are witnessing trees coming back to life, explosions of color from a bumper crop of spring wildflowers on our hillsides, and grasses galore! With all those tree, grass and flower pollen taking to air on our cool ocean breezes, more people are suffering from allergies with increased symptoms and greater difficulty controlling them. Many are turning to naturopathic medicine with its legacy of herbal, nutritional, and immune supportive therapies to manage their symptoms more effectively.

Dr. Carl Hangee-Bauer is SFNM’s founder and Clinic Director. He has a general naturopathic medical practice and specializes in immune support for allergies, autoimmunity and cancer support, functional gastroenterology and pain management. Desire more balance in your life?

Many times in our lives, it is necessary to remove toxic influences that are affecting us. Carrie Johnson is an international blogger and yoga teacher who is a colleague of Dr. Katie Strobe and is our guest blogger today. She is joining Detox with the Doctor (DWD) for the first time and has graciously put together a yin digestion yoga sequence and Spotify playlist as an extra benefit for DWD participants. Understanding the Three Stages of Adrenal Fatigue

Understanding the Three Stages of Adrenal Fatigue

People in functional and naturopathic medicine often speak about adrenal fatigue or adrenal dysregulation. In conventional medicine, adrenal fatigue is generally only recognized at its most extreme stage – Addison’s disease. From a preventive health point of view, there are gradations in adrenal health and our response to chronic stress. Dr. Hans Selye, MD, PhD, was the first modern physician to describe the body’s and adrenal gland’s 3-phase adaptation to chronic stress, which he called the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS).

Naturopathic doctors assess adrenal dysfunction based on symptoms, physical exam and a 4-point salivary cortisol test. Depending on a patient’s phase of adaptation, we use personalized nutrition, specific nutrient supplementation, botanical medicine, and lifestyle counseling to support resilience, energy, immunity, healthy weight and stress hormone balance.

Acupuncture Recommended as First-Line Treatment of Back Pain

Acupuncture Recommended as First-Line Treatment of Back Pain

On February 13, 2017 the American College of Physicians released new evidence-based clinical practice guidelines recommending that people with back pain be first treated with non-drug therapies, including acupuncture, heat, massage or spinal manipulation. Further the ACP advised patients should use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs if drug therapy is desired, with the exception of acetaminophen (Tylenol) due to its ineffectiveness and potential for harm. Finally, opiod and narcotic-type pain medications should not be used for treating back pain except as a last option.

Whether acupuncture works by promoting the flow of Qi or by its action on powerful hormones and body chemistry, or both, the fact is it works.

There’s More to Weight than the Scale

There’s More to Weight than the Scale

Many people count calories or watch the scale on a daily basis finding themselves disappointed that they aren’t able to move the needle even after weeks of dedicated effort. We are here to tell you there is more to weight than the scale. Your body is essentially made up of two main components—lean mass and fat. Lean mass includes muscle, bone, water and connective tissue. When you lose weight, it is possible to reduce fat, lean mass or both. The goal of weight loss is typically to decrease body fat while maintaining your lean mass. The scale is useful but only tells part of the story, which is why we monitor body composition (body fat and lean body mass) with the Inbody test. Find out more about how your body is adjusting to your diet and exercise on the inside, and come in for a free trial of the InBody scale. Please contact San Francisco Natural Medicine to come in for a FREE InBody Scan at 415-864-9324.

Why You Need to Detox—5 Important Reasons

Why You Need to Detox—5 Important Reasons

Your body has five major organs of elimination. In a detox, the liver, gut, kidneys, lungs and skin need to function in top shape so the body can get rid of toxins. If the body cannot get rid of toxic compounds quickly, they remain in the body, causing damage to our DNA which impairs cell function.
If you are considering a detox, it’s a great idea to have an evaluation with a qualified healthcare provider to ensure your liver, gut, kidneys, lungs and skin are supported in the process. Dr. Claire Graser, ND creates holistic detoxification plans with patients at San Francisco Natural Medicine in Potrero Hill. To schedule appointment call 415-643-6600.
